Nottingham, the regional capital of the East Midlands, is famous for many things - from fine lace to Robin Hood and the Sheriff to household names such as Boots. It is a cosmopolitan city, with a diversity of cultures, and countryside close at hand. The city combines the best of old and new. Shoppers have excellent modern shopping centres and traditional markets. Some of the good historical sites include Nottingham Castle, Sherwood Forest, The Council House, Wollaton Hall and The Goose Fair.

Nottingham is at the heart of the country, with three junctions of the M1 motorway within easy reach of the city centre.(24, 25 & 26)

Midland Mainline runs over 30 trains a day from Nottingham to London.

East Midlands Airport is just 12 miles away and can be reached by regular shuttle bus from the city centre.

By 2003 line one of Nottingham's new £200 million supertram, Nottingham Express Transit, will carry 11 million passengers a year, reducing car journeys by 2 million. Plans are well advanced to extend the network.

The city has four bus-based park-and-ride sites on main routes into the city. Further park-and-ride sites are proposed as part of the Net programme. There are over 10,000 parking spaces in city centre car parks, some of which also cater for cycles.

Famous around the world as the legendary home of Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest, at the heart of Nottinghamshire, has fascinated visitors since Victorian times, within its glades stands the mighty Major Oak, one of the largest and oldest oak trees in England.

wollaton Hall and Park

Wollaton Hall was built during the period 1580-1588. It is one of the most ornate Tudor buildings in Britain.

Robert Smythson designed it on the commission of Sir Francis Willoughby. Much of the original building remains, showing the style of architecture contemporaneous with the Spanish Armada.

The Hall contains the City's Natural History Museum. The surrounding 500 acre park was landscaped by the outstanding Georgian gardener Capability Brown.

It features a large lake and an iron-framed Camelia House, built in 1823 and is now home to a herd of red deer.

the Goose Fair

Nottingham Goose Fair: one of Europe's largest travelling fairs, with more than 150 rides and 450 games and exhibitions to thrill and amuse you.

The Goose Fair is believed to date back more that 1,000 years. The modern fair, packed with hundreds of amusements, becomes at night a spectacular carpet of lights. It has something to offer everyone, from the latest white knuckle rides to Victorian side stalls.

People come from far and wide every year just to soak up the atmosphere - an atmosphere alive with the tasty aroma of hot dogs, mushy peas, candy floss, toffee apples and brandy snap - as well as a rich variety of food including Japanese and West Indian food.

Nottingham boasts a wide selection of pubs, clubs and restaurants,over 370 in number. It is also home to the nationally respected Royal Concert Hall, Theatre Royal, and Nottingham Playhouse.

Nottingham has two shopping malls – The Victoria Centre and The Braodmarsh centre.

The Victoria Centre is one of the country’s outstanding places to shop. The shoppers’ choice is tremendous, with a wide range of department stores, specialist shops and the lively Victoria Market with more than 300 stalls selling food and household goods.

Big high street names are complemented by specialist retailing in the Exchange Arcade, The Flying Horse Walk, Bridlesmith Gate and Hockley.

sport and leisure

For those sports fans who wish to play, there are leisure centres, swimming pools, the National Ice Centre, an international tennis centre, an athletics stadium, bowling alleys, golf courses and the National Watersports Centre. In addition, for spectators there are two league football clubs, an international cricket ground at Trent Bridge, a leading ice hockey team, a greyhound stadium and a race course.
